Pinion Neutron – Dusty Pink

Small in size

Sized at 38mm, the Neutron is Pinion’s smallest watch to date. Whilst it is only 1mm smaller than the previously released Atom 39, a lot of attention has gone into reducing the overall length and height of the watch to make a sleeker and more refined profile when worn on the wrist.

The dial aperture has also been reduced by 2mm, meaning the bezel surrounding it is larger and in better proportion to new case design.

Pinion Neutron – Galvanic blue

Big on details

“The Neutron is the spiritual successor to the original Pinion Atom from 2017. However, for this watch I was eager to evolve Pinion’s graphic language further than I had previously. The deliberate act of omitting the Pinion logo and designing a new typographic style for numerals means at first glance, it may not instantly be recognised as a Pinion. However, I’ve referenced subtle styles and colours seen on previous models making this watch feel very much part of family and an evolution for the Pinion design code”.

Piers Berry, Pinion Founder and Designer of the Neutron

The main feature of the dial is a guilloche pattern, with the outer edge in a circular brushed finish. This is then electroplated to achieve the dial colouring (black, blue, dusty pink). Raised numerals are machined in brass, polished then electroplated in nickel (silver) before being applied by hand to the dial. Batons in a contrasting radium hue are printed and applied with SuperLuminova to aid legibility in low-light conditions.

Unlike previous models, which featured the Pinion logo prominently on the dial, The Neutron has opted for a subtle reference to the watchmaker’s name printed on the sloping inner bezel (rehault) to avoid clashing with the core guilloche centrepiece.

Pinion Neutron – Galvanic Blue

Grooved hands

Grooved hands on the Pinion Neutron

The Neutron features diamond-cut brass hands in a polished finish. The hour and minute hands also highlight a subtle etched groove in a contrasting matt finish running along their centre. The hands are nickel (silver) plated and filled with Superluminova to aid legibility.

Durable Swiss movement

Powering the Neutron is perhaps one of the most well- known and respected Swiss automatic movements: ETA 2824-2. Pinion has been using this movement since 2013 and it remains a reliable and quality choice of calibre perfectly suited for a fine watch such as the Neutron.

Each movement is regulated by Pinion’s watchmaking team in England over 5 days / 5 positions to a minimum of +/- 5 seconds variation a day to ensure it remains accurate.

Pinion – Galvanic Black watch

“Because ETA movements are quite scarce now, it may be difficult for companies requiring large quantities to still access these or opt for cheaper alternatives. Pinion’s ethos has always been about making quality small batches of watches, so using an ETA movement in small numbers and supporting it with servicing and parts is presently not an issue we face”.

Piers Berry, Pinion Founder and designer of the Neutron

A Personal touch

The Neutron features a circular brushed steel case back that is engraved and numbered.

Now that all engraving is undertaken in-house, means that the watch can be personalised by each customer to include a memorable date, name or phrase at no extra cost.

Pinion Neutron – Dusty pink

“Working on several special projects recently has resulted investing in a high-end machine to bring engraving in-house. Now, this means customers can choose to personalise their watch case for no extra cost.”

Piers Berry, Pinion Founder

Scottish watches is a top 10 (UK Hobbies – Apple) weekly podcast that takes a light-hearted look at the watch industry. On June 21st 2021, I chatted with Rikki in-depth about how and why I started Pinion back in 2013, some of the challenges I faced and how I came to work with several TV and film productions to supply them with Pinion watches, including Fast and Furious 9 which was released on the same week.

Pinion’s new chronograph, the Elapse is in the final stages of manufacture and presented here are some initial photos of a prototype model for the salmon dialled version.

This model will sit alongside the anthracite and silver watches. Whilst the darker tones of the anthracite will undoubtedly become the most popular seller of the range, its the changing hues of the Salmon model that makes this the most compelling watch of the collection.

Note: Some parts to the prototype are not perfect in finish as they were made to sample before actual manufacturing commenced.

Whilst the salmon dial is classed as a pink colour, its subtle tones and colour changes when reflected in changing light provides paler tones plus providing a vintage character to the watch.

Complementing the dial are galvanic blue hands in a polished finish that range from bright to dark again depending on the amount of light they reflect.

At 42mm, the case follows the same form as the Axis II; however, this is made slightly higher due to the chronograph movement. The total height of the watch is 14.5mm which still makes it very wearable. It has a brushed finished, whilst the crown and pushers are polished.

The watch features a revised double-o-ring crown design that has a raised Pinion motif. Note: We’ve adjusted the design slightly for manufacture.

The case back on this watch is a glass exhibition one where the Valjoux 7750 movement can be seen. For this, the original rotor is decorated in grey featuring the Pinion logo.

Pinion Elapse salmon dial chronograph

Pinion follows a strict design code when approaching new models, use of typography and finishes featured in the Elapse reference earlier models to ensure it still feels part of the Pinion family of watches.

Several challenges were faced when designing this watch. Firstly, non-conventional dial layout that has registers in crucial positions on the dial: 12,6 and 9. Second, was how to ensure the design of the chronograph remained clean yet functional.

The first step for this was to remove the date wheel, positioned at 3H to free up space: this extra piece of information would interfere with the design of the rest of the watch.

Next, the 12H and 6H registers designed to be the same format and size, with engine-turning used to highlight these.

Finally, the running seconds (9H) takes on a slightly different and smaller form, with the Pinion branding aligned on the right to help balance all the elements.

Pinion Elapse salmon dial chronograph

The dial itself is finished with vertical brushings and electroplated with the salmon colour. The brushes force light to be reflected and change the hue of the dial when seen at different angles.

Pinion Elapse salmon dial chronograph

As with the other Pinion watches, the Elapse sized at 42mm can be considered quite large, however, by design appears smaller when worn. (pictured on a 6.5inch wrist).

These shots on the wrist have had no photo re-editing, so give an accurate representation of the colour and tone of the watch when worn.
