“The original Axis’ primary focus was simplicity and legibility. Now a short-run edition of this model from 2018 features a sleeker 38mm case size whilst retaining all the detail from the original model”

– Piers Berry, Pinion Founder.

Design

Presented in a matt galvanic blue colour, this watch references the 42mm Axis II Bronze originally released in 2018. The larger applied numerals, the same style as seen on other releases such as the R-1969 and TT are machined from brass, sandblasted, nickel coated and filled with Super Luminova. Completing the dial are supporting radium coloured minute markers and a practical date display at 4:30.

Infinity on the wrist

On the reverse of the watch, is an exclusive illustration produced by British illustrator, Keisha Karlsen which has been engraved in-house.

The illustration is an interpretation of ‘Infinity on the wrist’ – and features a two-headed serpent joined in endless motion- referencing the continual powering of the automatic Swiss ETA2824-2 movement when the watch is worn.

A smaller size

This Axis II is presented in a smaller 38mm size compared to the original (42mm) making it a sleeker and more refined  profile when worn on the wrist.

Sized at 38mm, the Neutron is Pinion’s smallest watch to date and features a highly detailed electroplated dial with guilloche decoration as its centrepiece, brushed stainless steel case and is powered by the dependable Swiss made ETA2824-2 automatic movement.

As with all Pinion watches, the Neutron is manufactured in small batches, is designed and built in England, plus customers can choose to personalise their watch with free case back engraving

Small in size

Sized at 38mm, the Neutron is Pinion’s smallest watch to date. Whilst it is only 1mm smaller than the previously released Atom 39, a lot of attention has gone into reducing the overall length and height of the watch to make a sleeker and more refined profile when worn on the wrist. The dial aperture has also been reduced by 2mm, meaning the bezel surrounding it is larger and in better proportion to new case design.

Big on details

The main feature of the dial is a guilloche pattern, with the outer edge in a circular brushed finish. This is then electroplated to achieve the dial colouring (black, blue, dusty pink). Raised numerals are machined in brass, polished then electroplated in nickel (silver) before being applied by hand to the dial. Batons in a contrasting radium hue are printed and applied with SuperLuminova to aid legibility in low-light conditions. Unlike previous models, which featured the Pinion logo prominently on the dial, The Neutron has opted for a subtle reference to the watchmaker’s name printed on the sloping inner bezel (rehault) to avoid clashing with the core guilloche centrepiece.

Grooved hands

The Neutron features diamond-cut brass hands in a polished finish. The hour and minute hands also highlight a subtle etched groove in a contrasting matt finish running along their centre. The hands are nickel (silver) plated and filled with Superluminova to aid legibility.

Durable Swiss movement

Powering the Neutron is perhaps one of the most well-known and respected Swiss automatic movements: ETA 2824-2. Pinion has been using this movement since 2013 and it remains a reliable and quality choice of calibre perfectly suited for a fine watch such as the Neutron.

Each movement is regulated by Pinion’s watchmaking team in England over 5 days / 5 positions to a minimum of +/- 5 seconds variation a day to ensure it remains accurate.

Presenting the Elapse. Pinion’s first automatic chronograph that is powered by the world-renowned Valoux 7750 movement.

Sized at 42mm in diameter, as the name indicates, will allow the wearer to track elapsed time in seconds, minutes and hours, controlled by the two polished steel pushers.

As with all Pinion watches, the Elapse is built in small batches in England and comes with a two-year warranty.

Track elapsed time

The two polished chronograph pushers enable the wearer to start and stop intervals of elapsed time, which is observed from the registers and central chronograph seconds hand.

A simple push of the upper button starts the chronograph running. Pressing the same button again will pause it so elapsed time can be read. The wearer can then reset the chronograph by pushing the lower button or continue to track intervals of time with start/stop from the upper button.

The elapse captures 60 seconds from the central chronograph seconds. Every revolution moves the register at 12H to capture up-to 30 minutes. Longer durations of elapsed time of up to 12 hours can be read from the register at 6H.

A world-leading mechanical movement

Originally made in the early 1970s, the Valjoux 7750 is an updated automatic version of its hand-wound predecessors, the 7733 line from the sixties (which featured in Pinion’s R1969 limited edition chronograph).

Since then, the Valjoux 7750 movement has been widely utilised by many watch companies and has become known worldwide as a simple, rugged and efficient movement. A cam-shifting action triggers the process of stopping and starting the chronograph, and the sizeable automatic winding rotor can create a characteristic known as the ‘7750 wobble’ when worn.

Electroplated dial

Several processes are undertaken on the dial to give its multi-contrast finish. First, the chronograph registers are milled at 12H and 6H to create two lower levels. Engine turning is applied to these to create a contrasting effect making them appear darker under differing lighting conditions.

Next, subtle vertical brushing is applied to the base of the dial and circular brushing to the outer rehault ring. These are then electroplated with colour. The brushing helps with the contrasting tone of colour when viewed in different lighting conditions.

Finally, the dials are gently buffed before printing commences. Once complete, a galvanic varnish is applied, sealing the elements and providing a glossy surface to the dial.
