When the initial run of Axis II Bronze watches sold out, Pinion received many emails from customers wanting a bronze watch in the same ‘green dial’ look.

As a result, Pinion built a small collection of bronze watches that had the green dial from the Pure GG watch installed rather than the black dial as seen on the Pure L.E. watches.

Pinion recently met up with social media photographer Simon Cudd in Oxford, so he could view othenew Revival 1969 edition, but also a good chance to see the Pinion Axis and Pure bronze range of watches.

Simon bought along his own Pinion Axis (Green dial, Tan strap) which is fitted with the original buckle we launched the watch with – and his watch displays a lovely mat bronze patina which provides a beautiful contrast against the green dial of the watch.

Photographed in the collection, is the Axis Bronze (green dial) Axis Bronze dusk (brown dial) and the Axis Pure (black layered dial, applied indexes)

Hidden behind the 316L polished steel caseback of the Axis Pure L.E is a New-Old-Stock Unitas 6498 mechanical calibre, which features decorated geneva stripes and blued screws.

The 6498 movement was originally developed in the 1950s for Savonnette (hunter) pocket watches but their popularity grew after being utilised more recently in wristwatches like the Axis Pure.

Beating at an unfussy 18,000 bph, the 6498 provides accurate timekeeping and a sub seconds display at 6H, whilst It’s sibling, the 6497 has them positioned at 9H. Being handwound, the watch is powered manually by it’s yoke winding system and when fully powered can provide enough power for 46 hours of wear.

The requirement to wind the movement on a regular basis allows the owner to form a connection with the watch and to discover the delight of the slower tick-tick sound that you only really get with movements such as the 6498.

( Note: Some of the later Pinion Pure models feature an undecorated Unitas )

Pictured is the Axis Pure Steel, photographed at SalonQP last weekend. This watch very much conforms to Pinion’s principle of ‘Minimal / Complexity’.

The initial appearance of the watch is one of simplicity and minimalism, which helps to enhance legibility and the function of timekeeping, however seen at differing angles on the wrist, the complexity of the dial levels and finishes, the applied indexes, bespoke luminova, diamond cut hands and subtle coloured sub-seconds provide pleasing aesthetics for the wearer.

The Axis Pure Steel is limited to only 50 pieces and is powered by a robust hand-wound Unitas 6498 movement.

The watch crown is used to manually adjust the time and date in mechanical timepieces and ever since the inception of Pinion in early 2013, we have strived to produce the finest crown possible that could be used across our entire collection.

Having established the Pinion name in February 2013, we designed the logo for the brand that consists of the wording ‘PINION’ and a graphical representation of a pinion gear wheel (pictured centre). The identity was finalised in March 2013 and the symbols registered as a trademarks.

The image top left shows a section of the first concept designs for the Axis that we designed between February and April 2014. The Pinion gear wheel can be seen to be part of the crown.

The photograph top right displays one of the first images of our prototype watches, the Axis Black. True to our original designs, the gear wheel is engraved on the top of the crown.

Our desire to do better, resulted in a new crown design, which we developed in March 2014, firstly we wanted the crown to be more tactile – So we made the touch points on the edges larger. The Pinion gear wheel was designed raised from the top of the crown, providing more visual depth but still in keeping with our original vision and designs from the year before.

October 2014: The final image (bottom right) shows the finished manufactured crowns that are ready for assembly. The crowns are polished to provide a compliment to our watch hands. This is why we do not produce bronze or DLC crowns.

The new crowns will become available across our entire collection of watches – including the original Axis collection and customers who own the first collection of watches can upgrade to the new ones if they wish. (contact: hello@pinionwatches.com for more information).

Available this Autumn, the Pinion Axis Pure is a limited production handwound watch that will only be made in a run of 100 watches (50 steel, 50 bronze).

Central to the watch, is the dial which we’ve designed to be simple and highly legible. Behind this simplicity though is a complex set of parts, materials and engineering techniques which we’ve employed to create a miniature work of art.

The computer visual shows that the dial is formed of multiple levels. The first being the dial base (0) which is made of brass and coated in galvanic black. Cut into the dial (-1) is the circular recess at 6H which is designed for the Unitas 6498 sub-second hand. (the other variant Unitas 6497 is positioned at 9H). It is polished and finished with engine turning, before the seconds are overprinted in black. Finally the sharp white index lines are printed onto the black base and form the backdrop for the applied numerals.

Next are the applied indexes (1) for the numbers and batons that we’ve specially milled to create the Pinion typeface. For this we’ve adapted a geometic sans-serif typeface which takes it’s design influence from engraving letterforms of the late 19th century. Each index is individually milled and polished, prior to being filled with our own customised SuperLuminova® mix, emulating vintage watches from the turn of the century (that contained glowing Radioactive material). The polished edges of the indexes will capture the light and provide extra depth to the numerals and will be a perfect compliment to the polished hands and crown.

The final level (2) is the inner area of the dial. This is raised like the applied indexes, coated with satin black, brushed horizontally and finished with a galvanic treatment. The brushing effect is very subtle however when seen at different angles will appear to change tone and colour providing a subtle contrast to the overall appearance of the black dial. Finally, overprinted in sharp white will be the Pinion® lettering with our trademark gear wheel and triangular indexes which align with the white lines on the base.

Very much reflecting the character and soul of the Pinion Axis Pure, the dial is made with micro millimetre precision (1/100 of a millimetre) and the computer render can only achieve a fraction of how fabulous the finished article will look.

As with all of our watches, the Axis Pure will be assembled in the UK and will be presented in a elegant polished black Pinion presentation box.

We are pleased to announce a new watch for 2014: The Pinion Axis Pure

This new Pinion will feature a Swiss handwound movement, it will be available in bronze and steel cases and will be produced in a limited production run of only 100 pieces, shipping Autumn 2014. Anyone interested in reserving one of these watches should contact Pinion at: hello@pinionwatches.com

A WATCH FOR THE PURIST

As we live in modern times, with smart phones and other automatic timekeeping devices, the Axis Pure provides the perfect antidote to the digital age: As the name suggests, it celebrates mechanical timekeeping in its purest form by utilising a decorated handwound movement, the UNITAS 6498. Originally developed as a pocket watch calibre in the 1950s, this highly dependable and robust Swiss movement provides accurate timekeeping and when fully wound, a power reserve of 46 hours. Piers Berry, Founder of Pinion and designer of the Axis Pure: “The requirement to wind the watch on a regular basis, will allow the owner to form a connection with this mechanical timepiece. Plus part of the charm of this watch will be the slower tick-tick sound, which you only really get with handwound movements such as the 6498”.

REFERENCING THE PAST….FOR THE FUTURE

The design of the Axis Pure references classic military watches and instruments from the early 20th century. The numerals, indexes and hands mimic the colour seen in vintage watches from this period, which were painted in radioluminescent paint containing radium. The Axis pure has updated this using modern Swiss SuperLuminova® which provides visible timekeeping in low light conditions. The dial is built with multiple levels. The central area is raised and brushed vertically whilst the numerals and indexes are applied, polished and raised on the outer area providing depth to the dial and perfect clarity for timekeeping at all angles.

 STEEL AND MARINE GRADE BRONZE

The Axis Pure is available in two case materials: Stainless steel, which is polished, providing superb reflection and bronze alloy in brushed effect. Having already launched two bronze watches, the Axis Pure continues our passion with the alloy and is ‘Marine Grade’, meaning it shares the same high qualities as professional marine equipment. The alloy is highly resistant to corrosion by developing a natural patina over the metal. The effect and intensity of patina will vary on wearing conditions, meaning no two watches will look the same when worn over long periods. Both watches will come with a steel engraved case back containing the number of the watch and will come presented is our elegant Pinion polished wooden box.
