In 2016, Pinion decided to stop making bronze watches and instead focus on other materials, such as titanium as used in the forthcoming TT.

However, since all Pure and Axis II bronze watches sold out, Pinion has received quite alot of requests for making another bronze watch.

To gauge actual demand, Pinion published a survey in Autumn 2017 to find out what people wanted. The survey received 600 responses in total, and the outcome was as follows:

Axis II in original green dial: 35% (232 votes)
A bronze crown: 23% (156 votes)
A blue dial: 18% ( 120 votes)
Smaller size: 11% (80 votes)
Larger size: 7% (45 votes)

As a direct result of the survey, Pinion designed a refreshed Axis II which has a revised galvanic blue dial, applied numerals, plus the addition of a new Pinion bronze crown and bronze coloured handset.

As part of the revised Axis II line up for 2017, Pinion is introducing an additional model to the range, in the form of the AXIS II SI watch.

This new model references the materials used in the original Axis II Steel, but with a silver colour, dial finished with polished vertical brushings. The printed numerals are a dark grey appearance, and as with all Axis II models, the watch features polished applied indexes at the five-second markers.

This Axis II SL is available to purchase in two formats: ‘S’ which has a solid engraved case back and ‘E’ that has the decorated Swiss automatic movement, hunter green Pinion rotor and glass display.

Pinion makes a low-run edition of the Axis II with gunmetal case and galvanic blue dial.

This special timepiece references Pinion’s popular hand wound PURE GG model that was released earlier this year, but provides the functionality of a date function and the practicality of an automatic Swiss made movement (ETA 2824-2).

Made as an ultra low edition, the Axis II GG is now sold out.

Pinion is delighted to present the Axis II Bronze, which is the follow-up to the sold out ‘Axis Bronze’ from 2013.

The new Axis II Bronze features a darker green dial than the original, which when placed under certain lighting conditions, looks almost black.

With the addition of the exhibition caseback and higher grade movement, this model uses the same hue of green on both the front and back of the watch with the inclusion of the Pinion green automatic winding rotor.

Pinion had a busy start to 2016 by commencing the build of some new watches – and are delighted to share some photos of the Axis II Steel.

This fresh collection is an evolution of the debut release from three years ago and advances the designs of Pinion’s original trio with lots of new details.

Keeping the original clean and utilitarian feel of the 2013 original, Pinion remodelled the watch case to feature a two-step super-dome bezel that was first seen on the R-1969. This case profile will also follow on future editions including new Pure hand wound models that will be released next month.

Probably the biggest change is the dial design – Pinion omitted the outer white ring from the originals, replacing it with practical second markers. The numerical letterforms now reflect the styling Pinion developed with both the Pure and R-1969 making the entire family now look consistent and uniformed.

The original 2013 dials were satin finish, which Pinion has retained for the Axis II Bronze however to provide extra depth and detail for the Axis II Steel and Black variants of the watch, Pinion has polished the dials with subtle vertical strokes making the dial tone range from deep black to an almost anthracite appearance in different lighting conditions.

As a final level of detail for the dial, Pinion has added applied indexes to the main hour markers, which have thick polished silver edges and filled with SuperLuminova.

The entire collection of Axis II watches will now be available in two variations. As standard is the newly designed engraved steel case-back, which references the original model, but the Axis II is also being made with an exhibition case-back featuring a higher grade decorated Swiss automatic movement (ETA2824-2) and the inclusion of a new decorated Pinion green automatic winding rotor.

Here’s some images of the new Axis II dials.

They are similar in structure to the existing Axis dials, but contain some subtle enhancements:

  • The dials now contain second markers, something Pinion deliberately removed as part of the first collection, but are essential for timekeeping given the central sweeping seconds hand.
  • The original dials were just ‘printed’, where as the new ones feature milled and polished metal batons to provide extra detail and depth. Pinion has designed these batons to feature a thicker edge of metal, which is then filled with SuperLuminova.
  • The colouring and finish on each dial is now different from the originals: The green dial, which will be used for the Axis Bronze is still satin in texture, but features othe new Pinion deep green colour. Also, this colour is used for the new new Axis II decorated rotors. On the existing models, the black dial was satin, meaning it would sometimes appear grey in colour, this time – these have been polished and feature a very subtle vertical brushed finish, this makes the black appear darker which will be perfect for the Axis II Black DLC and Steel models.

Here’s some photos of the new hunter-green Swiss ETA automatic rotors that Pinion has decorated for the AXIS II collection being launched later this year.

In an automatic watch, such as the AXIS, the mainspring is wound automatically as a result of natural motion of the wearer’s arm which moves the rotor. So as long as you are wearing the watch, the movement provides infinite power.

Pinion is pleased to announce a redesign and upgrade to the original Axis Automatic collection of watches.

When Pinion launched in 2013, it debuted with AXIS – a trio of watches available in steel, black DLC and bronze.  Since then, Pinion has evolved its designs with the Pure and Revival watches and have now revised the original line up to bring these in line our current and future releases.

The 2015 Axis II will still be sized at 42mm but will take its dial reference directly from the graphic language of the R-1969 and Pure timepieces.

It’ll include a more detailed dial with applied indexes plus the case has been re-modeled to include our two-step supermodel bezel that was last seen on the R-1969.

The collection will be released later this year and will be available in the original form of steel, black and bronze.

Pinion recently met up with social media photographer Simon Cudd in Oxford, so he could view othenew Revival 1969 edition, but also a good chance to see the Pinion Axis and Pure bronze range of watches.

Simon bought along his own Pinion Axis (Green dial, Tan strap) which is fitted with the original buckle we launched the watch with – and his watch displays a lovely mat bronze patina which provides a beautiful contrast against the green dial of the watch.

Photographed in the collection, is the Axis Bronze (green dial) Axis Bronze dusk (brown dial) and the Axis Pure (black layered dial, applied indexes)

The watch crown is used to manually adjust the time and date in mechanical timepieces and ever since the inception of Pinion in early 2013, we have strived to produce the finest crown possible that could be used across our entire collection.

Having established the Pinion name in February 2013, we designed the logo for the brand that consists of the wording ‘PINION’ and a graphical representation of a pinion gear wheel (pictured centre). The identity was finalised in March 2013 and the symbols registered as a trademarks.

The image top left shows a section of the first concept designs for the Axis that we designed between February and April 2014. The Pinion gear wheel can be seen to be part of the crown.

The photograph top right displays one of the first images of our prototype watches, the Axis Black. True to our original designs, the gear wheel is engraved on the top of the crown.

Our desire to do better, resulted in a new crown design, which we developed in March 2014, firstly we wanted the crown to be more tactile – So we made the touch points on the edges larger. The Pinion gear wheel was designed raised from the top of the crown, providing more visual depth but still in keeping with our original vision and designs from the year before.

October 2014: The final image (bottom right) shows the finished manufactured crowns that are ready for assembly. The crowns are polished to provide a compliment to our watch hands. This is why we do not produce bronze or DLC crowns.

The new crowns will become available across our entire collection of watches – including the original Axis collection and customers who own the first collection of watches can upgrade to the new ones if they wish. (contact: hello@pinionwatches.com for more information).
