Hidden behind the 316L polished steel caseback of the Axis Pure L.E is a New-Old-Stock Unitas 6498 mechanical calibre, which features decorated geneva stripes and blued screws.
The 6498 movement was originally developed in the 1950s for Savonnette (hunter) pocket watches but their popularity grew after being utilised more recently in wristwatches like the Axis Pure.
Beating at an unfussy 18,000 bph, the 6498 provides accurate timekeeping and a sub seconds display at 6H, whilst It’s sibling, the 6497 has them positioned at 9H. Being handwound, the watch is powered manually by it’s yoke winding system and when fully powered can provide enough power for 46 hours of wear.
The requirement to wind the movement on a regular basis allows the owner to form a connection with the watch and to discover the delight of the slower tick-tick sound that you only really get with movements such as the 6498.
( Note: Some of the later Pinion Pure models feature an undecorated Unitas )
